The silver coin was struck from one ounce of 99.9% silver in proof quality and is dedicated to the Azure Kingfisher (Alcedo azurea). With a size of 18 cm and a weight of about 35 g, the Azure Kingfisher is one of the smallest kingfisher species. The Azure Kingfisher is native to Australia and Tasmania and is characterized by the namesake azure blue coloring of its plumage. The motive features a colorful depiction of an azure kingfisher that has captured a fish and is rising from the water. The left edge of the coin features the inscription “AZURE KINGFISHER”, while the right side depicts some of the overhanging vegetation typically found in the azure kingfisher’s preferred habitats. The reverse of the coin features Niue’s coat of arms as well as the weight, fineness, denomination and year of issue. Limited to 1,000 pieces worldwide, the silver proof coin is delivered in the original box including a numbered certificate of authenticity.
